In the midst of the Progressive Era, at a time when children were to be seen and not heard and women did not yet have the right to vote in the United States, Juliette Gordon Low sparked a worldwide movement that continues to inspire girls to learn new skills, embrace adventure, and be their best selves.

Juliette Gordon Low was born in 1860, the second of six children of William and Eleanor Gordon. The Gordons were a prominent family who had made their mark in business, government, and public service in Savannah. Until the Civil War freed the enslaved people of Savannah in December 1864, they also enslaved people to labor in their household and businesses. Though Juliette was only four when slavery ended, the wealth generated from this economic system provided the privilege she experienced for the rest of her life.

From these beginnings, Juliette Gordon Low started down an unlikely path—with many curious twists and turns—to become the founder of the Girl Scout Movement in the United States.

From the first official meeting of girls and leaders held on March 12, 1912, at the Louisa Porter Home in Savannah, Juliette Gordon Low’s “little local club” grew quickly to become the largest educational organization for girls in the world, with millions of girl and adult members pledging to make the world a better place.
